The background
Although Dartmoor is a natural wilderness, it is also internationally renowned as a rich cultural landscape containing evidence for thousands of years of human interaction. It has been used and shaped by humans in many different ways and this can be seen in the ruins of Bronze Age settlements or ritual complexes such as stone circles, rows or burial chambers.
Not only will you’ll explore and learn about how people lived and worked on Dartmoor but you’ll get to make a clay pinch pot or a simple woven bracelet made from Dartmoor sheep wool - just as our ancestors may have done.

Your Starting Point
Four Winds car park is the site of the old Foggintor School. A walled enclosure behind the car park is all that remains of the school that was built in 1913 for local children of the workers of the quarries at Foggintor and Merrivale. The school closed in 1936 as with the decline in quarrying activities families moved away. The building was demolished in 1964.
