The timeless landscape
Different elements combine to make Dartmoor’s character including open windswept upland moors with far reaching views and a sense of remoteness and wildness. There’s also its distinctive granite tors, large expanses of grass and heather moorland, sheltered valleys with ancient upland oak woodlands and fast-flowing rivers and streams, deep green lanes and a wealth of geological and archaeological features. Dartmoor is also home to not only an abundance of rare and distinctive wildlife but also to over 34,000 people including farmers using the common land to graze their hardy sheep, cattle and the famous Dartmoor ponies. It is an inspirational and yet timeless landscape, one where you can find discovery, challenge or adventure or absolute peace.

Our partner Emma Cunis says "Every day is different on Dartmoor. Much of the landscape has remained unchanged for centuries and yet the seasons change, the colours are different everyday, the weather is unpredictable, and the quality of light unparalleled."

Describing Dartmoor
We asked people what Dartmoor meant to them; they responded with space, freedom, access, natural, wilderness, unspoilt, beauty, nature, tranquility and wild…. all things that we love about this truly incredible space.
We love the horizon
Personally, Jess loves the immensity of Dartmoor’s horizon - especially with the drama of a squall coming through, the sound of a skylark or the plaintive cry of a buzzard echoing and stretching across a valley, the sense of history and the delicate beauty found in Dartmoor’s quiet green lanes.
