The background
The granite that forms Dartmoor was produced, in the depths of the earth, over 300 million years ago, and humankind has shaped it over the last 10,000 years. Dartmoor’s geological and human history have shaped Dartmoor into a wonderful landscape, full of varied habitats, from deep wooded river valleys to the wild open moor. And our Dartmoor Treasure Hunt allows families to explore and discover Dartmoor’s diversity of landscapes, history and wildlife.
As well as a photo list of things to find – from birds to animals and granite features – there’ll be letterboxes and geocaches to discover and rocks to climb.

Experience Location
Okehampton lies at the confluence of the East and West Okement Rivers – both which tumble down from off high Dartmoor and from which the town takes its name. Okehampton is an ancient town and was initially settled in the Bronze Age – its castle dates back to Norman times. The town is described as the walking centre of Dartmoor and is the start point of numerous, varied and beautiful walks and cycle rides exploring woodland, river valleys and winding up onto the Moor. See our downloadable guide for more details and ideas.
