Dartmoor's Ultimate Climbing Day

Around 65% of Dartmoor is made of granite including its famous tors which are great for rock climbing.

The background

Dartmoor’s granite tors – dramatic rocky outcrops – are a distinctive feature in the Dartmoor landscape. They help to form the unique wilderness landscape found within Dartmoor National Park and provide great opportunities for the fun, challenge and adventure involved in our Dartmoor’s Ultimate Climbing Day.

As well as rock-climbing, scrambling, abseiling and bouldering there will be the brilliant activity of weaselling – crawling and squeezing through gaps and tunnels in the tors. As well as all the fun aspects involved in getting to grips with Dartmoor’s granite you’ll learn about the history of Dartmoor and the evolution of its landscapes as well. This really is Dartmoor’s Ultimate Climbing Day!

The Tors Of Dartmoor

There are over 160 tors on Dartmoor. These dramatic formations with unique and distinct features were formed by forces of erosion weathering away granite over millions of years.

The granite that forms the tors is formed of three main minerals. On our Dartmoor’s Ultimate Climbing Day see if you can see: Quartz – appearing in the granite as translucent slightly greyish looking grains; Feldspar – white grains, sometimes stained yellowish or pink; and Biotite – dark brown glistening flakes.
