Food Tour Experience

Get a taste of Okehampton, its community and beautiful surroundings on our Okehampton Food Tour Experience.

The background

Known as ‘The Town With Moor,’ Okehampton’s proximity to Dartmoor gives it access to one of the best natural larders in the UK and Okehampton’s food businesses celebrate home-made, locally produced food.

On this experience you’ll explore Okehampton together with the inspiring Rebecca Kitty Green, founder of Okehampton’s wonderful 3 East Street kitchen and social space.

An integral member of Okehampton’s community Rebecca has helped to start the Okehampton Elf Outpost, Okehampton Vegans & Friends, Okehampton Area Business Social and Okehampton Festive Markets and the Okehampton Community Kitchen – a not for profit community interest company.

But as well as community, food is her world – as Rebecca says, ‘food breaks down barriers, creates conversation, feeds your eyes, your mind and then your belly.’ We can’t think of a better person to guide you on our Okehampton Food Tour Experience – a celebration of local people, produce and community.

The Community Kitchen

All small businesses are someone’s dream and 3 East Street founded by Rebecca Kitty Green is full of them. Rebecca’s food journey started with the Okehampton Inspiration Festival in 2016 where she ran a pop up cafe. From that she went on to run weekly markets in the Charter Hall and helped to set up numerous community enterprises including the Okehampton Elf Outpost, Okehampton Vegans & Friends, and Okehampton Festive Markets. Rebecca has won both food and business awards with her ethic of investing in community and supporting a circular economy. Rebecca has a love of community firmly at the centre of her small business – as she says, ‘community is everything.’

Experience Location

Okehampton lies at the confluence of the East and West Okement Rivers – both which tumble down from off high Dartmoor and from which the town takes its name. Okehampton is an ancient town and was initially settled in the Bronze Age – its castle dates back to Norman times. The town is described as the walking centre of Dartmoor and is the start point of numerous, varied and beautiful walks and cycle rides exploring woodland, river valleys and winding up onto the Moor. See our downloadable guide for more details and ideas.
